Red Charm
Red Charm is undoubtedly the best known and most popular red peony available. Also it's one of the earliest available double-flowered varieties of the season. The large, perfectly rounded buds can grow to be as large as 22 cm. Short, bold but powerful, its no coincidence the red charm has never lost its place on the top table. I still remember asking my father what varieties are best to plant. His response, 1. Red Charm, 2.Red Charm and 3. Red Charm
Early Bloomer, Best in Show
Beneath the bold flower, Red Charm's a hybrid — fully petalled, ball-shaped, and built for the field. The stems are short like she sounds, but it's the thickness that does the work — they hold those huge heads without buckling. Picked at the right tightness, she travels well.
Origin
Glassock first registered Red Charm in 1944 — a hybrid out of America that's quietly held the top of every red list since. By 1956 the American Peony Society had awarded it a gold medal. His other reds — Old Faithful, Red Grace — are still the closest things you'll find to a rival, but most growers will tell you Red Charm got there first, and stayed there.
