Henry Bockstoce
Every year we are amazed at how large the Henrys become. If you want a huge, dark red flower then look no further than Henry Bockstoce. Truly everything about this peony is enormous. The bud can grow to a big 4.5 cm and the flowers can, when fully in bloom, reach a diameter of 23 cm.
The Big One
Henry's a hybrid, and one of the youngest red varieties on the table. The form is double, opening rose-shaped — what holds it all up is the thickness: petals heavy, stems heavy, the whole plant built like the bloom needs it. Everything about Henry is heavy by design.
Origin
Everything about this peony is enormous — by design. Bockstoce bred Henry in the United States in 1955; the variety carries his name. It's a hybrid: the common peony crossed with the lactiflora, which is what gives Henry the stem strength alongside the show flower. Of all the red varieties on the world stage, only Old Faithful — also a Bockstoce-era American hybrid — comes in younger.
