Command Performance
Command Performance is a hybrid peony. This full-petalled flowers are among the largest of all peony varieties. It starts out red, but turns brighter during blooming. After two days of blooming, Command Performance shifts its colour from red to a dark orange and onto salmon. Eventually it will turn from peach to cream to white. This wonderful metamorphosis has earned Command Performance the nickname gobstopper.
Two Weeks of Theatre
Bomb form, double-petalled — and worth the wait. The buds aren't much to look at, almost surly, but two days in the vase and Command Performance starts the colour-change everyone knows. The vase life runs about two weeks, longer than most reds will give you. Mid-season picking, available across most of the season — a long run for a working flower.
Origin
The wonderful metamorphosis isn't an accident. Don Hollingsworth registered Command Performance in 1996, a seedling of Lorelei — another well-known peony variety. Modern by peony standards: where Red Charm comes from 1944 and Henry from 1955, Command Performance is the new generation, bred for the colour-shift everyone watches.
