Pink That Runs Hot

Full-petalled, opening rose-shaped — the form Sarah inherits, but Alex gets there first. Mid-season picking, ahead of Sarah by a couple of weeks, and the scent is what hits you next: intense, sweet, the kind that fills a room without trying. The colour runs darker than Sarah, especially in warm weather.

Origin

Second to Sarah in the cut-flower order, but his namesake came first by half a century. Dutch breeder Blonk registered Dr Alexander Fleming in 1950, naming the variety after the Scottish microbiologist who discovered penicillin and collected a Nobel Prize for the trouble. The pink in the petals carries the same quiet authority as the man.
